They’d run all night, away from the ranch, as far away as they could get, and now they rested in the shade of a secret spot he’d found. They would sleep here during the heat of the day, and tonight he’d take her hunting. He would have to teach her how. He would have to teach her everything, and he didn’t have much time. Because in only a few months, once she let him mate with her...
He could smell her ripeness. It was like a savor that filled the air around him. But she hadn’t given herself to him, not yet. When he’d approached her last night, she’d tucked her tail and refused him. She was being coy, but she wouldn’t refuse him forever. Soon her need would be too great, as great as his. Then, once they’d mated, they would have to find a suitable place for a den and dig it out in preparation for the young ones that would come.
And he would never be alone again.
He whimpered, nuzzling her silken fur, and she licked his scarred muzzle affectionately. Yes, he would never be alone again. He sighed with perfect contentment.
The night air was cool, hinting of the winter to come. The wolf could smell the distant snow riding on the wind. But that would come later. Now they had no need to worry. Food was plentiful and easy to obtain, which was good because she didn’t know how to hunt. In fact, she didn’t know the first thing about surviving at all.
She’d been too pampered. The humans had provided her shelter and sustenance from the moment she’d stop sucking at her mother’s teat. Even now, with her stomach growling from hunger, she hesitated when he would have led her down to where the cattle slept in the field, just waiting for them.
But he was patient. Life had taught him to be patient. So he encouraged her, prodding and coaxing, until finally she followed him toward the herd.
One of them caught their scent and bellowed a warning to the others, loping away in that clumsy way they had. But the wolf wasn’t interested in a full grown steer anyway. They couldn’t run very fast, but their horns could be dangerous, and many of them were clever at eluding capture. No, he wasn’t interested in the big ones, not when he had plenty of young ones to choose from.
He spotted one, a gangly-legged calf loping along after the others. The wolf broke into a run, startling the calf and tumbled it away from the rest of the herd. Lady raced along at his heel not really understanding but enjoying the run, the smell of the night and the excitement of the chase.
The calf bellowed, probably calling to his mother to save him but he wouldn’t be saved, not this night. The herd ran away without him as the calf dodged and feinted, trying to escape but making all the wrong choices as the wolf wore him down while conserving his own energy.
